Boston.TV and Element Productions teamed up with the Boston Celtics to create content for Comcast on Demand. The series premieres on February 7th.

Boston Celtics Spread the Holiday Cheer

Boston.TV 'n crew captured the Boston Celtics handing out Christmas presents to kids from the Boston Medical Center at Dick's Last Resort last December 11.

I think the Celtics said it best on their website,

Boston Celtics players along with Kia Motors delivered toys to patients at Children's Hospital Boston while other Celtics team members spread holiday cheer to Boston Medical Center at two holiday events today. Celtics players spent the afternoon visiting patients at Children's Hospital Boston and hosting a holiday party for Boston Medical Center's Pediatric Hematology Program at Dick's Last Resort.

At Children's Hospital Boston, Celtics players including Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen, teamed up with Kia Motors to distribute gifts to in-patients collected through the Kia Holiday Assist program. Kia vehicles filled with toys were driven to Children's Hospital where players unloaded and distributed gifts to patients. The players visited different wings throughout the hospital and met with patients and their family members.

"Merry Christmas, boys and girls!"

Overall, the kids had fun and got everything they asked for, except BTV intern Joey Pugh, who wanted a four-wheeler. Sorry Joey, the 4-wheeler couldn't fit in Kevin Garnett's sleigh.

Ben's Dream

Boston.TV was on hand at the Ben's Dream event recently to capture friends helping Ben battle San Fillipo syndrome.

According to bensdream.org,

Over Columbus Day weekend 2007, The Ben's Dream Baseball Tournament and BENefit Concert raised over $10,000 for Ben's Dream to aid the mission of finding a cure for Sanfilippo Syndrome.

On Saturday evening, recording artist and ballplayer for the Ben's Dream White Sox, Ari Hest www.arihest.com, performed for a packed house at Harper's Ferry in Allston, MA to raise money and awareness for Ben's Dream: the Sanfilippo Research Foundation. Mieka Pauley and Tim Blane opened for Hest.

Lenny Clarke (born on September 16, 1953) is a comedian from Cambridge, Massachusetts, famous for his thick Boston accent. Sometime during the 1970s, as related in the Comedy Central roast of Clarke's friend Denis Leary, Clarke ran for mayor of Cambridge, MA. When asked by Leary what his platform was, Clarke replied "Fuck the Kennedys". Clarke had buttons and bumper stickers made with this slogan on them.{ In an attempt to spark interest in his campaign, Clarke stole a Boston bus and began driving it around until he realized it was just him driving a bus. Clarke then began to pick up random people and drop them at their doors.

Clarke was the most famous "saloon comic" in Boston during the 1980's, the heyday of the Boston comedy scene. The DVD release When Standup Stood Out (2006) details Clarke's early career and his affiliations with other famous Boston comics, such as Steven Wright and Denis Leary, his good friends. In 1980, Clarke wrote and starred in a local television show Lenny Clarke's Late Show featuring Wright and Leary, in collaboration with Boston comedy writer Martin Olson. Clarke and Olson were roommates, and their apartment, known by comedians as "The Barracks", was a notorious "crash pad" for comics visiting Boston, and the subject of a documentary film as Clarke and Leary explain in When Standup Stood Out.

In this week's episode, PJ meets up with Lexington boys and girls basketball. Lexington boys beat Belmont 114 - 68 in what proved to be quite an adventure for baby face BTV intern Joey Pugh. Ask him about his first experience talking to a high school cheerleader. The Minutemen are working for their 7th Middlesex League Title in 8 years.

Wellesley girls basketball beat North Quincy 61-44.

Alex Fiola, on the Durfee Girls Basketball Team scored her 1000th career point.

Watertown Boys Basketball beat Melrose Boys Basketball 71 - 37.

In 1919, the requisite number of legislatures of the States ratified The 18th Amendment to the Federal Constitution, enabling national Prohibition within one year of ratification. Many women, notably the Women’s Christian Temperance Union, had been pivotal in bringing about national Prohibition in the United States of America, believing it would protect families, women and children from the effects of abuse of alcohol.

Women being the reason for prohibition? Nah! I don't believe it.

The proponents of Prohibition had believed that banning alcoholic beverages would reduce or even eliminate many social problems, particularly drunkenness, crime, mental illness, and poverty, and would eventually lead to reductions in taxes.

However, during Prohibition, people continued to produce and drink alcohol, and bootlegging helped foster a massive industry completely under the control of organized crime.

Prohibitionists argued that Prohibition would be more effective if enforcement were increased. However, increased efforts to enforce Prohibition simply resulted in the government spending more money, rather than less. Journalist H.L. Mencken observed in 1925 that respect for law diminished rather than increased during Prohibition, and drunkenness, crime, insanity and resentment towards the federal government had all increased.

Kottonmouth Kings at the Worcester Palladium

Sully from Godsmack at the Boston Music Awards

Boston.TV's Jobian met up with Godsmack's Sully Erna for good times and better conversation at the Boston Music Awards.

From Godsmack's site,

In February of 1995, after being behind the drums for more than 23 years, Sully Erna decided to start a new band. It was only a matter of time before he realized he needed to take charge and step out from behind the kit to front the band himself.

One year and a couple of member changes later Godsmack was born. Sully Erna, Robbie Merrill and Tony Rombola hit the studio and recorded their first CD titled ALL WOUND UP. They did this over one weekend for a measly twenty six-hundred dollars.

Over the next two years, the band played throughout the Boston scene with drummer Joe Darco and began earning a strong reputation of being a great live band. The noise they were making in the New England area created a snowball effect like no other.

Godsmack began drawing in bigger and bigger audiences to their live shows. Their CD began circulating through the streets of Boston and eventually landed in the hands of a DJ for WAAF, a Boston radio station. WAAF put "Keep Away" into heavy rotation and it quickly soared to the #1 spot at the station. Newbury Comics, a New England record store chain, agreed to sell the CD on consignment and the grind continued.

Shortly after the success of "Keep Away" Godsmack went back into the studio and recorded a single titled "Whatever", which became the new local favorite on WAAF. It took off in the blink of an eye and the race was on.

Legendary comedian, Christopher Guest, received a honorary doctorate degree from Berklee College of Music and Boston.TV was there to capture it all.

!!! (three exclamation marks, often pronounced as chk chk chk) is an American band that formed in autumn 1996 from the former bandmembers of The Yah Mos, Black Liquorice and Popesmashers.

According to their site,

!!! members Nic Offer (vox), Jerry Fuchs (drums), John Pugh (vox &
perc), Allan Wilson (perc, synth, sax), Mario Andreoni (git), Tyler
Pope (git), Justin Van Der Volgen (bass) and Dan Gorman (perc, synth) like to push their own limits. At times, this requires rigorous physical training. Rehearsing their third album ‘Myth Takes’ in a rented house on the “wrong side” of Nashville, the band began each day with a strict exercise regime. “We all lived in this huge empty house” remembers Nic. “Every morning we´d do a kung-fu workout, and after that we´d jam all afternoon and night. I think the neighbors thought we were a cult or something. One time the postman walked up to the door when we were all in the living room, in our short shorts, chanting and contorted into these weird sweaty positions. It worked, though: don´t mess with the magic”.

Now these dancefloor-destroying Pan-American dancing men have taken their trademark dance-funk sound into previously unimaginable territories. The ten tracks comprising ‘Myth Takes’ are denser and groovier than anything they´ve previous presented: a cut´n´paste sound-splash built from meaty basslines, spaghetti western guitars, African polyrhythms, electro house bleeps and Philly soul. It’s no exaggeration to say that there is no music like this being made anywhere else on the planet. With ‘Myth Takes’, !!! have stretched out to become truly peerless.

Bassist Justin Van Der Volgen produced the record, threading the best bits of the Nashville house jams into a dense sonic patchwork that has as much in common with 70s Jamaican dub as 21st century club music. ‘Myth Takes’ features some of the sparkliest of pop, as well. “Really, all we want to do is play. If we could jam together forever without stopping, we probably would. We´re dedicated to chasing that elusive groove”.

Nowhere is the magic more obvious than on stage. Formed in 1996 to play the all-night party scene in Sacramento, California, they´re still easily one of the most exciting live acts in the world. A 2006 UK arena tour supporting Red Hot Chili Peppers helped the band to further hone their performing skills. “We learnt that to play shows that big, you have to make the hooks hit harder. I could feel us getting better every night”.

I’ve come full circle! As an Emerson College student the most memorable moment was when I got accepted into the internship program at Kiss 108! I grew up listening to Kiss 108. It was my favorite radio station. I started out as an intern on the Matty in the Morning Show. I also interned in the production department and became a “Club Kiss” mixer. It was the knowledge I learned and the people I met during my internship that gave me the ability to work in the music business. I worked for Jive and Giant records, I was director at the Boston Record Pool and I was the resident dj at Mercury Bar (now Gypsy Bar) in Boston. I got back into the radio end of the business working at WWKX-Kix 106FM (now Hot 106FM) in Providence, RI. This led to my job at Kiss 108’s sister station WJMN – Jam’n 94.5FM which was my home for the past 6 years. Now I have a new home here on Kiss 108!

Shortly after his comedic genesis, Dan was given advice by a more experienced comic. He said "Dan, ya have to get up there and tell it like it is. Not only did he not enjoy the show, he did not

At 16, the Locobazooka music festival — which is starting to shorten
its handle to simply Locofest — is old enough to party with the
grown-ups, as the one-time annual outlet for young up-and-comers this
year presented Heaven and Hell (aka Black Sabbath with singer Ronnie
James Dio) and Alice Cooper. Heaven and Hell, Cooper, Queensrÿche and Shadows Fall led a pack of Locofest bands spread across five stages
during a marathon show Sunday at the Tweeter Center. Cobbling elements of both Ozzfest and The Warped Tour, the shed’s main stage stayed dark
until later in the day when Queensrÿche was ready to go on, forcing the
few thousand in attendance to orbit a series of stages in the venue’s
back lots and wooded grove. Vendors, band booths and carnival
attractions livened up a concourse as a slew of heavy-sounding acts
dominated the early action.
Highlights from the early Loco doings included the set turned in by
guitarist Bumblefoot; the return of Waltham with guest appearances by
singer Jet from Sam Black Church and Ken Susi from Unearth; and the
charismatic pop of twin sisters Carmen and Camille.

According to the Boston Globe,

It didn't really matter that the Wyc Grousbeck-led
mixed quad finished yesterday's charity race during the Head of the
Charles with a time of 20:13.4. Even if they hadn't fared as well, the
foursome had already supported the race's causes (AccesSportAmerica,
Cambridge Community Foundation, and Community Rowing) and used their
training miles to raise an additional $250,000 for the Perkins School
for the Blind. A serious rower, Grousbeck was joined in the effort by
fellow venture capital wiz David Fialkow, a sports enthusiast but a novice rower, and 1992 Olympic doubles partners Mary Mazzio and Cindy Ryder-Matthes.

According to Wikipedia, America's most reliable information source,

Jamie Treays (born January 8, 1986), known by his stage name Jamie T, is a 21-year-old English singer/songwriter from Wimbledon, South London. He attended Reed's School in Cobham, Surrey until he was 16 and is currently signed to Virgin Records, but released his Betty and the Selfish Sons EP on his own Pacemaker Records label.

He defeated Jarvis Cocker and Thom Yorke to win the Best Solo Artist at the 2007 Shockwave NME Awards. He has also been nicknamed "one man Arctic Monkey". Canvas Magazine have described him as "like the bastard lovechild of Billy Bragg and Mike Skinner doing his best Joe Strummer impression".

On July 17, 2007, Jamie T's debut album Panic Prevention was shortlisted as one of the 12 nominees for the Mercury Prize.

Boston.TV aimed its cameras at Red Sox Head Athletic Trainer Paul Lassard, the man in charge of keeping baseball's second largest payroll on the field.

According to this site,

A Northeastern University graduate, Paul Lessard, 43, was hired in December to be the Head Athletic Trainer for the Boston Red Sox. He has served as the Diamondbacks' Head Athletic Trainer from 1997 through the 2005 season. He has an extensive background in collegiate sports, as well as professional sports. He was athletic trainer for Boston University from 1988 to 1994 and head athletic trainer at Holy Cross from 1994 to 1997. He also served as a summer assistant athletic trainer for the NFL's Atlanta Falcons in 1985 and 1986, followed by a stay with the New York Yankees (A) affiliate in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. A native of Stamford, Conn., Lessard received an undergraduate degree in athletic training from Northeastern University. He is a member of NATA, the Eastern Athletic Trainers Association, and the Athletic Trainers Association of Massachusetts.

Esperanza Spalding Hosts the Beat!

Esperanza Spalding, jazz bassist from Berklee, hosts the Boston.TV Beat.

According to Berklee's student profile on Esperanza,

Esperanza Spalding was 15 years old when she entered the world of the working musician at a Portland, Oregon, blues club, armed with a single bass line.

"Somehow I got this gig with a blues band. I don't know how. I could play only the blues in F," she says.

Every member of the band was a seasoned veteran. Lead vocalist Sweet Baby James Benton had been a fixture on the Portland jazz scene since the 1950s. The trumpet player used to gig with Ornette Coleman. But they were eager to replace their bassist. Somehow, someone turned them on to Esperanza, who had only been playing the instrument for a couple of months.

After that first performance, one of the musicians pulled her aside and asked her to rehearse with them "so she could actually learn something." It turned into a weekly gig and an invaluable experience that fostered Esperanza's interest in the bass and did wonders for her rhythmic feel.

Grill the Chef, Boston.TV's new series, catches Boston Chefs off guard at various food events around the city and asks them a series of random off-beat questions that allow viewers to know them a bit more personally. This original series is hosted by Alissa Bigelow, host of Rustic Kitchen's In the Kitchen.

This week's guest is Loic Le Garrec, General Manager and Co-owner of Petit Roberto Bistro.

Many restaurants nowadays refer to themselves as bistros, despite the fact that their food, ambiance and prices are at odds with the true definition of the term.
