Tiwa Savage

Boston.TV teamed up with Berklee College of Music again to showcase even more talented acts from the college. This week, we covered Tiwa Savage, vocalist from Nigeria, and her band at the Beehive. Tiwa describes her music as a "mix of soul, funk, and ballad, basically R & B."

Tiwa

According to her own site,

Her first big break arrived at the age of 17. George Michael brought her in as a background vocalist for a major concert in Wembley Stadium. That was the night that changed Tiwa’s life forever! Ever since then Tiwa has been blessed to work as a background vocalist for many great artists such as Mary J.Blige; Chaka Khan; Blu Cantrell; Emma Bunton (Spice girls); Lemar; Kelly Clarkson; Andreas Bocelli; Stephen Gately; Hearsay; Sheila E; Ms Dynamite, and so many more. Life on the road was electrifying! Touring with a myriad of bands, and sharing the stage with the likes of Sting, 50 Cent, and Black Eyed Peas, Eminem, Destiny’s Child, and Robbie Williams has helped develop her live stage performance.

Dear Leader

Boston.TV caught up with the Aaron Perrino and Will Claflin from Dear Leader on the Mass Bay Lines MV Freedom Boat Cruise.

Dear Leader 1

Dear Leader

According to Splendid,

Thanks to the popularity of the throat-tearing rock anthem "Hum" and the release of their debut New Parade on Roadrunner Records, Perrino and The Sheila Divine flirted with mainstream rock stardom, courting labels but never finding a willing suitor. Meanwhile, while cultivating a rabid fan base in their hometown, the band was never quite able to burst beyond the 2,000-plus capacity of the Avalon nightclub. Sensing stagnation, Perrino called it quits and struck out on his own, eventually forming Dear Leader. Now, as Dear Leader - a band that differs from the Sheila Divine by virtue of its refined intensity, lusher rock melodies, and Perrino's maturation as a songwriter - swells in recognition beyond the Boston city limits and draws renewed attention from record labels, does history run the risk of repeating itself?

Esperanza Spalding Hosts the Beat!

Esperanza Spalding, jazz bassist from Berklee, hosts the Boston.TV Beat.

And check out BostonNow's interview with her here.

Esperanza!

According to Berklee's student profile on Esperanza,

Esperanza Spalding was 15 years old when she entered the world of the working musician at a Portland, Oregon, blues club, armed with a single bass line.

"Somehow I got this gig with a blues band. I don't know how. I could play only the blues in F," she says.

Every member of the band was a seasoned veteran. Lead vocalist Sweet Baby James Benton had been a fixture on the Portland jazz scene since the 1950s. The trumpet player used to gig with Ornette Coleman. But they were eager to replace their bassist. Somehow, someone turned them on to Esperanza, who had only been playing the instrument for a couple of months.

After that first performance, one of the musicians pulled her aside and asked her to rehearse with them "so she could actually learn something." It turned into a weekly gig and an invaluable experience that fostered Esperanza's interest in the bass and did wonders for her rhythmic feel.

Editors

Boston.TV's Jobian caught up with the Editors at the Paradise Rock Club as they played material from their new album 'An End Has A Start.'

Editors

According to their site,

Editors return in June 2007 with their second album An End Has A Start, on Kitchenware Records. Following on from the phenomenal success of debut platinum album The Back Room the new recordings see the band deliver on the promise so many identified on that record.
Recorded in Ireland at Grouse Lodge with Garret Lee and mixed at Olympic Studios by Cenzo Townshend, the album sees the team behind the re-recorded version of Bullets set to work on an entire collection of Editors work with stunning results.
To seasoned Editors watchers, a handful of tracks on the album will already be familiar. The heart stopping Weight Of The World and Bones were both regulars in the band's set from the summer of 2006 and their recorded versions are as sure as their live relations.

Grill the Chef: Loic Le Garrec

Grill the Chef, Boston.TV's new series, catches Boston Chefs off guard at various food events around the city and asks them a series of random off-beat questions that allow viewers to know them a bit more personally. This original series is hosted by Alissa Bigelow, host of Rustic Kitchen's In the Kitchen.

This week's guest is Loic Le Garrec, General Manager and Co-owner of Petit Roberto Bistro.

Petit Roberto

According to their website,

Many restaurants nowadays refer to themselves as bistros, despite the fact that their food, ambiance and prices are at odds with the true definition of the term. In France, a bistro is where blue collar workers go to eat homestyle fare at very modest prices; it is often served on bare wood or paper-topped tables with draught beer or vin ordinaire.

Daily blackboard specials are prepared by Chef /Co-Owner Jacky Robert, whose career and reputation are well-known to both Boston and west coast diners. The General Manager/Co-Owner is Loic Le Garrec, a native of Brittany and veteran of Boston and New York's top dining rooms.

In true bistro tradition, entree prices are under $12 at lunch and under $20 at dinner. In addition, more than a dozen plated desserts daily, all made on the premises by Kristen Lawson.

Denise Hajjar Hosts the Boston.TV Beat!

Denise Hajjar, a leading fashion designer in Boston, hosts the Boston.TV Beat this week.

Denise

A little bit more about Denise, from her website,

Every season I try to create a collection that is always fresh, current, a little edgy in approach, with a sharp twist. I am always dazzled by colors & shades, by touch & details, by design & shapes, by romance & attitude.

Using only beautiful and unusual mix of fabrics, I provide unsurpassed attention to detail, combined with the cut of the garment and the perfect fit, making sure that each piece will have a long lasting appeal.
My designing is a reflection of the world around me. A combination of strength, sensitivity, and imagination, all the while, staying pure to whom I am as a designer.

Having you look fabulous, is what I try to achieve each time. Over twenty years as a designer, has given me the expertise and confidence to provide each of my clients just that. I design a line of clothing that reflects a total look of what they would like to wear, not what they are told to wear.

It's about tuning in to the individual's lifestyle and personality to create just the right look. I bring my clients to the edge of fashion and style, but never over. That edge is the place where inspiration and creativity meet. What I find truly exciting in moving forward as a designer, is that as I continue to learn and grow, my clients continue to benefit.
